Men are more likely to be colorblind than women The gene that causes the most common type of color blindness is on the X chromosome, explains the National Eye Institute. Even if a woman has a gene on one of the two X chromosomes, a functioning gene on the other will make up for the loss. When males inherit the gene on their only X chromosome, they become color blind.
